The fall of Croatian Government’s „little Norway“ – no contract signing for Adriatic oil drilling

The harmful project of exploration and exploitation of oil and gas in the Adriatic Sea is about to fall apart. One of the reasons is the big public opposition, as well as the S.O.S. Adriatic campaign. Citizens clearly showed that they care about the Adriatic. At Thursday's (24.9.2015.) session, the Croatian Government abolished the concession for seven blocks which was awarded to the Austrian OMV and American Marathon Oil. The two companies announced already in July that they would not sign the contracts for oil drilling in the Adriatic. Although it was announced that during this session the Government would give approval for nine contracts for ...

“S.O.S. Adriatic”: A great victory for the campaign! Oil companies withdrew due to public pressure.

The "S.O.S. Adriatic " coalition welcomes the decision of Marathon Oil and OMV - the two oil companies with the biggest number of concessions - to withdraw from the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas in the Adriatic. "First, the media reported that the reason for this decision was the border dispute between Croatia and Montenegro, while today the companies announced that it is because of economic reasons, low oil prices and uncertain investment. We believe that the public pressure was crucial for this decision as it is now quite clear that the majority of citizens are opposed to this harmful project, as shown by the latest surveys. We also ...

The Coalition S.O.S. Adriatic joined a protest against the announced oil and gas exploration in the Adriatic Sea in Budva on Tuesday 10th March. Protest gathered activists of environmental organizations from Montenegro, who carried banners saying “No drilling in the Adriatic”, “Montenegro oil beauty”, “Do not use Adriatic for private exploitation”, and ...

S.O.S. Adriatic: We request the Government to cancel the contract signing with concessionaires

The associations gathered in the coalition 'SOS Adriatic' welcome the request from the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for the implementation of cross-border consultation on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). Also we posses information that the Italian Government had already sent the same request. Transboundary consultations in these proceedings are binding for a number of years and have become a common practice among the Member States of the European Union. We assume that the requests are sent this late because Slovenian and Italian Ministry of Environment have expected the appropriate official notification from Croatian Ministry of ...
